I stood at the entrance to the building Helen worked in, my hands shoved in my pockets as nerves bubbled in my stomach.

We’d been inseparable since our date at the weekend, spending every moment we could together, with me making her come as often as I could. I had it so bad for this woman that I was here, not able to wait until she got home to see her.

She walked out of the building, tilting her face to the late afternoon sun, a smile spreading across her face. She let out a contended sigh before turning to walk my way, her mouth dropping open as she noticed me.

“Jax?”

I leaned in and hugged her, squeezing her tight as my lips dusted her ear. “I couldn’t stop thinking about you,” I whispered.

She squeezed back, pressing her cheek against my chest. “Me too,” she murmured.

I released her before I did something stupid, like kissing her in front of the whole town. “Can I walk you home?”

She blushed. “I have my car.”

I nodded because I knew she did, but I just wanted to be around her. “How about we get ice cream, then you can drive me home?”

“Like another date?” she asked quietly so no one walking past could hear.

“I guess. If you’d like to go on another date with me.” I batted my lashes at her, hoping I was coming across as cute and innocent, while my thoughts were anything but.

“I mean, I did have an okay time on the last one, so I guess we could,” she replied with a wink.

I pointed to the ice cream shop down the road and we started walking, my fingers twitching to take hold of her hand. “Do you think we should tell your kids about us?”

Helen stopped, her head snapping to the side. “I-I… why?”

I pursed my lips, regretting the words the minute they had left my mouth, because I knew she’d think it was too soon, and she’d probably be right, but I was obsessed with the woman. “I want to touch you, hold your hand, kiss you in public. I want the whole world to know you’re mine, beautiful.” I didn’t try to lower my voice or hide my words from nosey passers by.

“Jax,” she whisper-hissed. “People might hear you.”

“I don’t care. Let them hear.”

Helen’s face fell. “Actually, I’m going to head home. I’ve got a headache and a sugar rush isn’t going to help. I’ll see you later.” And just like that, she was walking away from me to her car.

I jogged after her, slipping into the passenger seat as she started the engine. It was obvious to see that I was fucking this up and so I decided honesty was the only way.

She drove through town towards the house, her eyes fixed on the road, the rapid rise and fall of her chest showing me how much she was freaking out right now.

“I’ve never done this before,” I said, turning to face her.

“Done what?”

“Dated.”

Helen’s head swung sideways, and the car veered onto the wrong side of the road, making an oncoming vehicle honk their horn.
